Depending on the primary technique your therapist uses, you may or may not need to undress. For a full body massage, most people undress completely. However, you may choose to wear underwear. Your massage therapist will give you privacy to undress, and you will be covered with a sheet and blanket at all times except for the area being worked on.

Typically, getting a massage once every week or two is a good frequency to keep your muscle tissue soft, feeling good, and knot-free. Frequent massages can work wonders on both your physical and mental health. However, if you are dealing with chronic pain or a specific diagnosed issue, your frequency may vary. Talk to your massage therapist and ask their recommendations in treating your affected area, and most importantly, if you take medication or have a diagnosis, talk to your doctor about their recommended frequency.

That is completely fine! You shouldn’t feel like you’re fighting the urge to stay awake if you get tired. It’s even a compliment to your massage therapist because it means you’re so relaxed that you’re able to fall asleep. Do not stress about staying awake or alert or feeling as though you have to act a certain way. Again, the session is all about you and what you get out of it, so as long as you feel relaxed and comfortable, that’s all that matters.

All you have to do is lay down, relax, and make yourself comfortable. Your massage therapist may adjust your position before beginning if necessary. Some may choose to talk to their therapist throughout, while others may want to talk at the beginning then drift off into quietness, while others may not want to talk at all. Either way, the massage is all about you and whatever will make you feel the most comfortable.

One of the first questions that people ask is how to choose the right spa. Do some internet research and find out about the different spas and the areas they are in. Speak to family and friends and ask for recommendations. Research the different types of treatments offered and decide what you need. Decide what the purpose of your visit will be, relaxation, detoxification or weight management. Decide how much you are willing to spend as this will affect where you can go and the kinds of treatments you can take.

In general you should not eat before having spa treatments. If you are hungry, you could maybe have a small snack such as some fruit or a cup of tea but nothing more than that. If you eat, you risk getting nauseous during your treatments.

It’s best not to wear jewellery to your spa treatment. Most spas do provide you with a locker for your clothing and other personal effects. The jewellery will get in the way of your having an effective treatment. Do not put your jewellery in your robe pockets as this is a sure way to lose your jewellery.

Yes. It’s hygienic and polite. It is far more pleasant for your therapist if you are clean. This is especially important if you have been enjoying a physical activity. The shower will also help your body decompress before your treatment. The warm water will open up your pores and the products applied to your body will be more easily absorbed.
